Working with References
This page establishes two things:
- conventions for authors to use when citing work in their sections of the Wiki. Each citation should be followed by a linkable DOI or ISBN number if available
- Procedure to include reference tags to ensure footnotes appear properly.
Contents
- 1 Reference Format
- 2 Creating Footnotes
- 3 References
Reference Format
Durable Links for All Citations
DOI
Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is the preferred journal reference link where it exists.
DOI offers a permanent source for information about documents (digital objects) including where they can be found on the internet.
If your source does not include a DOI number, use Crossref.org to find the correct DOI. NOTE that this site is a free resource, but requires email registration.
The DOI.ORG site has more information.
DTIC
Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) is the preferred SERDP, ESTCP or other Department of Defense sponsored technical document.
Relevant citations can be found at DTIC.MIL and the link can be included in the reference for articles on ERWiki.
ISBN
International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is the preferred book reference.
The ISBN official website is ISBN.ORG.
The ISBN can be determined with knowledge about the author or title at ISBNSearch.org
EPA/ITRC Reports
These reports typically have a catalog code number that is useful for identification. Additionally, a standard format of Author, Report Title, Report Name, Catalog Number, Report Date is used for this wiki.
Syntax

Creating Footnotes
Wiki pages create footnotes automatically when the content being referenced is followed by <ref>Full Citation</ref>
within the body of the article. When one source is cited multiple times, the first instance of that citation can be named so that subsequent instances of the citation will not result in duplicative references. This is accomplished by using the following Wiki Code: <ref name="Citation Name">Full Citation Here</ref>
for the first citation and <ref name="Citation Name" />
for subsequent citations. The article will automatically create only one footnote for the named reference and assign all subsequent citations to that one footnote.
